The day Sean Payton was hired as Denver’s head coach, he previewed what his first several months on the job would look like.“For the early part of six, seven, eight months, whenever you go to sleep at night, your checklist won’t be complete,” he said Feb. 6. “That’s just part of the deal.”There’s always still more work to do when trying to overhaul a roster and kickstart a franchise that’s mired in a seven-season playoff drought.Payton’s roster checklist won’t be complete when he goes home in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, either, despite Tuesday afternoon’s hard deadline for NFL teams to cut down their rosters to 53 players. That’s assuming he, general manager George Paton and the rest of the scouting and coaching staff make it home at all in the time between the 2 p.m. Tuesday roster cutoff and 10 a.m. Wednesday, when waiver claims on all those cuts are processed and more than 1,000 players become free agents.“I’m going to go right inside and tonight we’re going to be he...Police in standoff with alleged armed man in Orange County

But an unknown number of people are still missing.Officials suggested that responders likely have already recovered any remains that are recognizable as such, and they are shifting the response to focus on removing hazardous waste and making the area safe for residents to begin returning.“We have wrapped up almost completely the search and recovery mission and moving into the next phase,” Darryl Oliveira, the interim administrator of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, said at a news conference. The next phase would be hazardous waste removal conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, he said.Maui Police Chi...Should the SF Giants get in on the Los Angeles Angels fire sale?

SAN FRANCISCO — The Los Angeles Angels responded to Shohei Ohtani’s UCL injury and the team’s fall out of the playoff picture with a stunning salary dump fire sale on Tuesday. The team placed starter Lucas Giolito, relievers Reynaldo López and former Giants Matt Moore and Dominic Leone, as well as outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Randal Grichuk on waivers, according to ESPN. This presents an opportunity for the San Francisco Giants to add one of those players while only having to pay what remains on their contract. All would be rentals on expiring contracts, set to be free agents in the offseason.Perhaps the Angels are also motivated by the potential savings of more than $7 million if all the players get claimed. That would be significant because it would take owner Arte Moreno’s team under the luxury tax threshold.Because the Giants wouldn’t have to offer up any assets in exchange, it’d be worth exploring jumping into the waiver claim line for one (...Australian prime minister says referendum to create Indigenous Voice to Parliament will be held on Oct. 14
