NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street drifted to a mixed finish Friday after data suggested the U.S. job market is still warm enough to keep the economy growing but maybe not so hot that it stokes inflation much higher. The S&P 500 lost 12.64 points, or 0.3%, to 4,398.95, though slightly more stocks within the index rose than fell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gave up 187.38, or 0.6%, to 33,734.88, and the Nasdaq composite edged down by 18.33, or 0.1%, to 13,660.72.A lot is riding on whether the economy can navigate the narrow pathway to avoid a long-predicted recession. Perhaps more importantly, it wasn’t far off economists’ e...Review of Guatemala’s vote appears to largely uphold results from June 25 presidential elections

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — A court-ordered review of Guatemala’s June 25 presidential election that included a second look at dozens of precinct tally sheets appears to have upheld the original vote totals, an electoral official said Friday. If candidates Sandra Torres and upstart Bernardo Arévalo remain the two highest vote-getters in the re-examination, it will boost the likelihood that their one-two finish in the first round will stand and that the two candidates will head to a run-off election Aug. 20. Asked about the vote tally review during a news conference Friday, Magistrate Gabriel Aguilera of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal praised the precinct panels of regular citizens responsible for tallying votes and told them not to be discouraged by critics of their work.“In an exercise of civic responsibility, they watched over the vote of each Guatemalan and with the results of the second hearings … they confirm the June 25 results,” Aguilera said. “This has to be emphasized and su...How major US stock indexes fared Friday 7/7/2023
