By KEVIN FREKING and STEPHEN GROVES (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. George Santos easily survived a vote Wednesday to expel him from the House as most Republicans and 31 Democrats opted to withhold punishment while both his criminal trial and a House Ethics Committee investigation proceed. The effort to kick Santos out of the House was led by his fellow New York Republicans, who are anxious to distance themselves from a colleague infamous for fabricating his life story and accused of stealing from donors, lying to Congress and receiving unemployment benefits he did not deserve. But the resolution failed to gain the required two-thirds vote. Supporters could not even gain a simple majority, with the final vote being 179 for expulsion and 213 against. To succeed, numerous Republican lawmakers would have had to break ranks with newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson, who has said Santos should get his day in court. Johnson, R-La., also recently told Fox News that if Congress is...New parking meters activated in Pacific Beach

SAN DIEGO -- Parking meters are now active in parts of Pacific Beach. The meters, which are part of a year-long pilot program, are located where there was already a two-hour parking limit. The city argues the meters will encourage parking turnover so more people can access shops and restaurants. However, not everyone is on board. Some neighbors have said they are curious to see how the new meters will play out.Kyle MacDougall and Gabriel Granados live in North Pacific Beach and say they often use ride shares to the beach.Granados said he thinks the new meters will help regulate parking flow.“If someone is going to be at the beach, and they want to be there for 5, 6 hours, that’s totally cool, but I don’t think that you should take up the prime road parking lot, so I gotta see it. I think it’s an interesting take."From Saturday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., people will have to pay $1.25 an hour at meters along Garnet Avenue between Mission Boulevard and Fanuel Street. The federal government says it expects the flow of foreign nationals leaving the war-torn Gaza Strip to Egypt will continue in the coming days, even as Canadians had been warned that their safety could not be guaranteed if they chose to make the trip.Global Affairs Canada said Wednesday night that it was aware of reports that one Canadian citizen was able to leave the Palestinian territory at the Rafah border crossing with the help of a third party, but offered no further information.“Canada has one of the largest contingents of nationals in Gaza,” the statement from the department said. “We expect further crossings daily over the coming days.”A list of those allowed out published Wednesday by the General Authority for Border Crossings in Gaza included citizens of Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Japan and Jordan — but not Canada.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for all Canadians to be allowed out.“We of course continue to ...Former student awarded $150K after CPS forced participation in Hindu rituals

Kennelly ruled in favor of Mariyah Green for Constitutional violations of her rights by the Board of Education of the City of Chicago and the David Lynch Foundation over mandated participation in a Hindu ritual while attending Bogan Computer Technical High School in Chicago's Ashburn neighborhood.According to a press release Wednesday, Green's lawyers said they wanted to hold educators and program developers responsible for requiring participation in the promoted program that violated her Christian beliefs. One positive from Minnesota’s debacle Monday in Atlanta was the return of Jaden McDaniels. The wing — playing in his first game after straining his calf in the preseason opener in Abu Dhabi — finished with 12 points on 5 for 6 shooting while serving as one of the Wolves’ few apt defenders. That all came in 24 minutes, as McDaniels is playing limited minutes while working himself back.“He looked good,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch told reporters. “It was unfortunate he was on a minutes restriction, because we really could’ve used him out there guarding (Dejounte) Murray, but he spent the bulk of his minutes guarding (Trae) Young and he did a good job.”McDaniels said it “felt good to be back, just playing basketball.” He noted he found a good rhythm early. The early buckets helped, as did the Timberwolves’ ramp-up strategy.“I’ve been playing a little bit before I got to play in a game — like playing in stay-in-shape league (after practice) and stuff, so I’ve been able to hoop a litt...Zeynep Tufekci: Past lies about war in the Middle East are getting in the way of the truth today

Moshe Lavi, whose relatives have been taken hostage by Hamas, recently talked to a group of New York Times journalists about his family’s agony. His pained voice turned to anger when he recounted encountering disbelief that Hamas committed terrible atrocities when it attacked Israel. Lavi seemed especially bewildered by people “arguing over the semantics” of whether people were beheaded or their heads fell off or even whether there were hostages in the Gaza Strip. In one particularly gruesome twist, there’s been an uproar over whether Hamas had beheaded babies — an unverified claim that President Joe Biden repeated before the White House walked it back and has been subject to much discussion since.Indeed, since Hamas did murder children and take others as hostages, should it get credit if it didn’t also behead them? It’s an appalling thought. Some of this skepticism is surely the result of antisemitism. But that’s not all that’s going on.One key reason for some of the incidents of doub...Booking photo released of Cornell student accused of anti-Semitic messages

Published Sun, 24 Nov 2024 04:16:15 GMT
The Colorado Avalanche began this season with a desire to play Alexandar Georgiev a little less after he carried so much of the workload near the end of last season, but the early-season schedule has allowed him to play every game so far. That streak of eight straight starts will end Wednesday night when the Avs welcome the St. Louis Blues to Ball Arena. Ivan Prosvetov, acquired on waivers just before the regular season began, is going to make his first start.Georgiev began the season with six straight wins, and still leads the NHL in that category. The Avs have dropped back-to-back games without scoring a goal, but the coaching staff saw a chance to finally give their No. 1 goalie a break.“We’ve discussed it over the last few starts, especially,” Bednar said after practice Tuesday. “At 6-0, you’re kinda like, ‘Well, this isn’t that taxing of a schedule.’ Then you get the extra day in Buffalo. But now I think his last two games probably...Kiszla: Do Sean Payton and crazy-rich Waltons have the stomach for rebuilding the Broncos?
