Does aid to Ukraine deprive the European Union’s freedom?

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:06:08 GMT

Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, a deputy in the National Assembly (DLF), leader of the party "Get up, France", and ex-candidate for the presidency of France believes that the current leadership of the country has lost freedom of decision, has fallen into dependency on the United States and spends money that should have been spent on itself, to fund Kyiv. Is this true? - asks Gabriel Lavigne. The European Union has become one of the leading partners of Ukraine during the Russian full-scale invasion. The Western partner has provided financial, humanitarian, and military support. Particularly, from their national budgets and the EU budget, Ukraine has received almost 60 billion euros of aid, 10 of which – for Ukrainians who left the country and fled the war to the European Union. Additionally, the EU has allocated over 500 million euros for humanitarian aid for civilians affected by the war.The EU has already allocated 3.6 billion euros through the European Peace Fund to strengthen the capabilit...

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:06:08 GMT

The President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia have held talks in Brussels facilitated by the President of the European Council Charles Michel. This positive development saw progress on border and transportation issues after earlier talks with President Michel stalled when Armenia refused to participate in a meeting last December, writes Political Editor Nick Powell.Charles Michel’s efforts to help Azerbaijan and Armenia agree to a lasting peace were put on hold at the end of last year when Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan refused to attend a further meeting in Brussels with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. But patience by the European Union -and by Azerbaijan- has been rewarded with a meeting that went ahead on 14 March. It seems that some progress was made in Brussels in the dispute between the two countries. It is primarily over the Karabakh region, which lies within Azerbaijan’s internationally recognised boundaries but has brought devastation to a much ...

A Procrastinator’s Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:06:08 GMT

Every year holidays like Mother’s Day seem to come upon us faster, and every year procrastinators find themselves resisting roadside flower vendors (supporting them isn’t a bad thing, though) and supermarket gift card kiosks as we flip through the leftovers and reject greetings in the gift card aisle. Long gone are the days when we were kids and homemade coupons for a massage or breakfast in bed were an option.  The good news is we live in the modern age so buying something last minute, like today, and sending a screen shot of the item is perfectly acceptable…. plus, it gives mom something to look forward to. Here are our favorite last minute L.A. gift ideas for mom, or yourself!(Awe Inspired)Awe Inspired jewelry has a huge fanbase for its layered look and ornate yet classy style, but the L.A. boutique is also beloved for its women’s cause-minded ethos. Phillies’ Bryce Harper ejected after charging Rockies dugout

DENVER (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper was ejected from Sunday’s game against Colorado after charging at the Rockies’ dugout following the last out of the top of the seventh inning, setting off an altercation that cleared both teams’ benches and bullpens.Harper appeared to respond to Colorado reliever Jake Bird, who clapped a hand against his glove and said something toward the Philadelphia dugout.Harper was initially restrained by Rockies catcher Elias Díaz, then Phillies third base coach Dusty Wathan prevented the two-time NL MVP from entering a group of players and coaches gathered near the first-base line.Harper returned to the NL champion Phillies on May 2 after recovering from Tommy John surgery.Bird was also ejected.Phillies manager Rob Thomson had been thrown out the previous inning after arguing with plate umpire Ryan Wills over a called third strike on Kyle Schwarber.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsSource

How Barcelona won its 1st Spanish league title since Messi’s traumatic exit

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona’s risky bet to mortgage the club’s future paid off Sunday — in the short term at least — when a team led by newcomer Robert Lewandowski clinched its first Spanish league title in four years.Barcelona won its 27th league title, second to Real Madrid’s 35, with four rounds remaining after a 4-2 win at Espanyol with a pair of goals by Lewandowski. Now the club can finally start a new chapter after winning its first major title since the painful exit of Lionel Messi two years ago. Here is how Barcelona led the league since the 13th round, brushing aside an arguably more talented Real Madrid side and giving Atletico Madrid no chance of catching up.WIN NOW, PAY LATER?When club president Joan Laporta, the man who first hired Pep Guardiola nearly 15 years ago, returned for a second stint in charge near the end of the 2019-2020 season, he found a club in ruins. The financial situation of the club with 1.3 billion euros ($1.4 billion) of debt meant Laporta could...

Stars coach Pete DeBoer says he will take a Game 7 at home any day of the week. He has another one Monday night, though his first with Dallas. The Seattle Kraken, in their first postseason, are already playing their second Game 7 on the road. “I think pressure is going to be on both teams,” said Kraken forward Jordan Eberle, who had two goals in their 6-3 win Saturday night. “I think for us, we’ve obviously been through this as a group once.”The NHL’s lone playoff game Monday between the Stars and Kraken will be only the fourth Game 7 in the league this postseason. There were five Game 7s in the first round last year, then no more in those playoffs. There was the potential for another one. Edmonton hosted Vegas on Sunday night in Game 6 of the other West series, looking to get even and force a Game 7 on Tuesday night. While the West remained unsettled, the East Conference Final matchup was already set after the Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers both wrapped up thei...

Keller strikes out 13 as struggling Pirates beat Orioles 4-0

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:06:08 GMT

BALTIMORE (AP) — Amid a dreadful May stretch for Pittsburgh, Mitch Keller provided another reminder of how good the Pirates looked just a few weeks ago.Keller struck out a career-high 13 in his second straight outstanding start, and the slumping Pirates won for only the second time in 13 games, 4-0 over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.“That might be the best pitching performance of the season. That was a pitching clinic,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “He’s got four or five really plus pitches. We were 0-2 on every at-bat, it felt like.”The Pirates avoided a sweep after dropping the first two games of the series. Pittsburgh was 20-8 after a 16-1 win at Washington on April 29. Then the Pirates scored just 18 runs in their next 12 games. They managed four Sunday without a single extra-base hit, and that was plenty the way Keller (5-1) was pitching. The right-hander allowed four hits in seven innings and did not walk a batter.Keller was also responsible for Pittsburgh’s only ...
