Denver airport installs new security plan as auto thefts increase DENVER (KDVR) — New questions are arising from travelers after Denver International Airport announced a new security plan to address auto theft in several parking lots. Some 7 million people use the airport’s lots, which have a total of 51,000 parking spaces. DIA said 378 thefts were reported between Jan. 1 to July 31 this year. These vehicles are stolen most from the airport — and they’re not Kia or Hyundai "That’s a vast amount of ground to cover," said DIA spokesperson Stephanie Figueroa, who also pointed out that incidents at the airport are comparably less likely, considering the number of thefts across the metro area. The airport is working to crack down on theft with a new security plan that includes an expanded security force already making patrols and a new surveillance system using HALO cameras, short for High Activity Location.“They are higher technology cameras that track people a little better," Figueroa said. Earlier this month Mayor Michelle Wu declared conditions around Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue had reached “a new level of public safety alarm.”The Boston City Council heard the alarm, and hit the snooze button. On the heels of Wu filing an ordinance giving police the authority to clear out homeless encampments at Mass and Cass, urging the council to “take swift and urgent action” to approve it this week, the council swiftly and urgently put it on the back burner in its Wednesday meeting.Councilor Ricardo Arroyo, who chairs the government operations committee, said he’s targeting the last week of September or first week of October for a hearing, which typically occurs before the Council votes on a policy matter.“One of the things that could happen is at the hearing there could be issues about legality that are identified, or ways in which we c...

Folan: The importance of parenting from the sidelines

Folan: The importance of parenting from the sidelines As a parent of high schoolers and a veteran educator, I know all too well that the start of a new school year elicits a range of emotions for parents. The good – joy, excitement, and hope. The bad – anxiety, and, yes, the ugly – fear. If we, as parents, are to successfully navigate the school year, we must learn to identify how these emotions affect us, our actions, and how we parent. As a parent, “we are only as happy as our least happy child” for good reason. We must also remember the discomfort felt by our child, and what we feel as parents is natural and part of their maturation process, and our enduring commitment to them. During each school year, all school-age children face a range of setbacks and challenges. While some are greater than others, everyone scores poorly on a test, skins their knee, gets cut from a team, earns a detention, has their feelings hurt, makes friends, and then loses friends. Everyone feels the pain of not being included to play, not being invited to a p...
